Pd – dmmit all over again…

Never did work on that English homework, I made some soup and decided to try Pd instead.  The lecture today made me want to use Gem as part of my project, because there is a monitor in it.  If people could manipulate it while they’re standing in front of my project, that would be awesome.  However, I’m finding that I never got the Gem library in my computer correctly and didn’t think I would need it, so I never fixed it.  Should have known that would come back to haunt me.  Ah, the toils of being inept.

my logochip won’t work with my computer. i wasn’t worried about this as it was working w/the laptop up in C6. I can’t tell you how excited I am to troubleshoot.  I think it’s my serial cable, as I do not have those extra pieces soldered together.  Actually, I did it, but then I put the LogoChip in my backpack and didn’t have the heatshrink shrunk on yet, and the little wires broke off.  Now I have to wait to come back to class to finish it.  Which leads me to a point about this class.  When you get stuck, you’re just kind of screwed, because you can’t proceed until someone helps you, and it’s real easy to tell yourself to just wait until the next class period when you can ask someone for help.  I guess I could try to be a little smarter about it and figure it out myself, but I don’t know where to start.  I could just wait.  Or I could drive up to campus and work on it in c6, but I live about 20 minutes south of campus, so that sucks.  I feel good that I sat down and made a good effort for a couple hours solid.  I know I could do more today, but somehow I now have a headache.  I’m going to switch gears and work on English homework for a bit.  It’s nice and friendly.

See what I mean? About every half a page or so, I get something like “if you are using a Windows machine and COM1 is not available, you will need to edit the file called config.txt that is included with the LogoChip software.”  Right on top of that.

This is exactly what I’m talking about.  This manual automatically assumes that I will know how to use a voltmeter.  Right.  Because I knew a lot about this stuff before I signed up for the class.  Oh well, I feel like my mistake this semester is just getting too much on my plate, then getting frustrated and instead of persevering like I usually will, I have become overwhelmed and walked away.  It is not too late, though.  I am going to turn this ship around.  It may take a few more hours and a lot of blogging, but suprisingly the blogging helps.   Maybe I’ll figure out how to use the voltmeter on my own, seeing as how the instruction manual assumes that I already know how to use it, too.  .  I am sure some of you guys are laughing, because this is pretty rudimentary stuff, but I am also just as sure that there is something you know nothing about.  This stuff is pretty alien to me.  I prefer to buy my alarm clock.  Maybe next year I’ll build it.  Probably not.

Thinking back on the comment John made in class about none of us having our stuff done, I am just going to lay it all out on the line.  What’s up with me is that I just spent $100 on crap for this LogoChip at Radio Shack.  I am wondering how much else I will end up spending before this class is over.  I don’t have anything done because I have been procrastinating everything, as the last thing I want to with my next hour of free time is stare at something that totally confuses me.  I feel like it is taken for granted that we will just “pick these things up as we go along”.  What has failed to have been realized here, is that John has random pieces of information lodged in his brain which help him to understand these “simple” concepts.  Like the fact that 440 means “a”.  How a circuit works, a doctorate, yada yada yada,  Who the hell else knows that?  No, you don’t have to understand things fully to make them work, but you must have a conception of it to attempt to articulate a plan of action with it.  On top of that, once I started getting behind, I just wanted to give up.  I don’t know what the hell he is talking about most of the time, and I will assume that is my fault for not reading and accessing all of the freaking files on the wiki.  There just seems to be so much external information and rather than just feel like an idiot I will distract myself by doing something else and before you know it I have fallen asleep and not gotten anything done.  Plus, all of these ridiculous messages I keep getting in my email box are driving me insane.  It’s not just the techartsound class, but I am a member of a few other groups, too, and I just keep getting all these messages.  It’s like a constant barrage of random sh*t.  Also, I don’t spend a lot of time trolling the Internet looking for random things to send to the message board, but I do have a couple I’ll post tonight.  My goal for this week is to get my sh%t together and get caught up.  I will document my experience in case anyone is going through the same thing.  If it’s too much for you then stop reading and do something else, as the info obviously is of no service to you.  Have a nice day, and if you don’t, it’s all your fault.  Andrea

A Woman’s Mind

This project is hard for me to explain, but I’ll do the best that I can, and hope that you all feel welcome to comment and make suggestions.  It will be representative of a womans mind, namely the things which encompass a womans mind on a day to day basis and from birth to death.  I plan to start with shards of broken mirror suspended from the cieling on fishing line (to make them as invisible as possible).  the mirror shards represent our vanity in our progression through life and the fishing line represents how we try to hide it.  also, i plan to have a womans figure hanging from the cieling, but not as literal as a hanging body.  the hanging piece will be represented by linking sheets of plastic together by chains to represent the body, then on the sheets corresponding to the body parts have the symbols and pictures drawn that represent how a surgeon would draw lines for incision and surgery on a plastic surgery patient.  the rest is hard to explain, i will be happy to elaborate further in class, or possibly show a diagram.  I just wanted to have something up here for people to see because I feel like i’m slacking….as far as making it interactive, i wanted maybe some kind of sensor to know when people are present and giving it attention and when there’s no one, it could go back to dark colors and such.  i feel that there could be far better ways to make this piece interactive, i’m still working on gathering materials for the construction.  feel free to comment….thanks, i’ll post more soon….

Apparently you can only post three links on wordpress, and two of them happen to have to be wordpress.com and wordpress.org, unless I’m doing something wrong.  Croiky!  This is a load..

Guess I should’ve told you what I like to do. I like to read, ramble, play records (do lots of things that start w/”r”), write poetry, dwell on things, make music, tinker around, rearranging my house and being on stage; oh, and naturally, I like to buy stuff. Wierd stuff. Even though I’m 24 years old, I still like to play dress up, and pretend. I like to do things that are educational as well as entertaining, so TV is not on my list of stuff to do later. I’m excited because I dropped this class I hated about an hour ago, and just knowing that I don’t have to go any more has changed my outlook on the semester a bit. I also like to think, which is similar to dwelling on things, but I like to think of thinking as more like dwelling w/curiosity, whereas just dwelling tends to make you want to give up on things if you do it for too long. I’m frustrated right now because it’s generally three to four days between working on things w/pd and this website and such, and I usually have to spend the 1st half-hour each week relearning how to do everything. That and my memory capabilities leave a little to be desired, so when you see me taking notes in class, it’s not because I like to, it’s because I suffer from CRS. Thanks for visting my blog. Hopefully I’ll figure out how to link my new pd file to it and such. Have a nice day!!! And remember, if you don’t, it’s your own fault =P
